Leading in Spiritual Formation

Introduction

The Worldwide Church of God has gone through an amazing transformation. This church has gone from being a sectarian group with unorthodox doctrines to being a member of the National Association of Evangelicals. In addition to major doctrinal changes, methods of management and administration within the organization have also changed.

While it is a wonderful and miraculous transformation, it has not been without great pain and a sense of loss. Many pastors have seen half of the members of theirSample Image congregations stop attending. While most of those who still attend are thankful for the changes that have been made, some are hurting from the pains of change, and some are angry.

In addition to dealing with hurting and angry people, the pastors also are faced with learning a new theology. Along with the new theology have come new methods of pastoral management and administration.

There is so much to learn and so much to do, it is difficult for the pastor to know where to focus attention. There is the need to learn about evangelism and church growth, to become involved in the local community and in out-reach ministries, to visit and to counsel the members of the church, to learn new methods of local church management and administration. During this time of painful and almost overwhelming transition, pastors wonder where they should begin and in what direction should they focus their time and energy. What should be the main business of a pastor in the Worldwide Church of God today?

Mystery of Prayer 2
Saturday, 26 July 2008

Why pray?  Many of us ask for prayer, but does it help anything?

Yes. Let me tell you. YES!

Prayer is mysterious.  We are told an earnest prayer is powerful.  We are told God will hear the prayers of the righteous.  We are told our prayers will move God’s hand.  There is power in prayer we do not understand, yet we are to be obedient and persevere in it, even if our puny minds cannot conceive why.

The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous.  ~Proverbs 15:29

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.  ~James 5:16

Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble.  Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless others because you were called to inherit a blessing.  For the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep  his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceitAnd he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue itFor the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the Lord’s face is against those who do evil ~1 Peter 3:8-18

Now He (Jesus) was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart…  ~Luke 18:1

By awesome deeds You answer us with deliverance, O God of our salvation; you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.  ~Psalms 65:5

From Max Lucado, The Great House of God:

You and I live in a loud world.  To get someone’s attention is no easy task.  He must be willing to set everything aside to listen: turn down the radio, turn away from the monitor [ouch!], turn the corner of the page and set down the book.  When someone is willing to silence everything else so he can hear us clearly, it is a  privilege.  A rare privilege, indeed.

[Your] prayers are honored [in heaven] as precious jewels.  Purified and empoweed, the words rise in a delightful fragrance to our Lord. . . . Your words do not stop until they reach the very throne of God. . . .

Your prayer on earth activates God’s power in heaven, and “God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven.” . . .

Your prayers move God to change the world.  You may not undersand the mystery of prayer.  You don’t need to.  But this much is clear:  Actions in heaven begin when someone prays on earth.

Mat 5:4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Mat 5:5 Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Mat 5:6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Mat 5:7 Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Mat 5:8 Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Mat 5:9 Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Mat 5:10 Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great [is] your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Above All
Thursday, 17 July 2008

Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began

Chorus:
Crucified, and laid behind a stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what you’re worth

Chorus

There is none like You
Thursday, 17 July 2008

There is none like You
No one else can touch my heart like You do
I could search for all eternity long
And find there is none like You

Your mercy flows like a river wide
And healing comes from Your hands
Suffering children are safe in Your arms
There is none like You
